About Wandsworth Oasis
About This Shop
Founded in 1989, Wandsworth Oasis is a chain of 7 Wandsworth based charity shops, 1 of which is a dedicated book. We raise money exclusively for people in and from the area. We have 4 paid members of staff and more than 30 volunteers. Our voluntary income for the year ended March 2011 was £275,000.
Oasis exists to support people affected by HIV in and from Wandsworth. We gratefully accept good quality donations from local people and businesses – clothes, accessories, books, furniture, bric-a-brac, and most electrical goods.
The profit from our shops is distributed to other charities that directly support people affected by HIV. Like many other inner London boroughs, the prevalence of HIV in people living in Wandsworth is higher than in other areas of the country. In 2006 it was more than triple the rate of the England average. As treatment for HIV prolongs life expectancy, we expect to see the prevalence of HIV increase as more people are diagnosed and survive. It is estimated nationally that a third of people with HIV have not yet been diagnosed.
Last year, funds went to Mildmay Hospital, the Salvation Army, CARA Trust, LEAT, and St George’s Courtyard Clinic. Over the last 10 or so years we have given grants totaling over £200,000 to a wide range of locally focussed organisations.
