About St John's Hospice – Lancaster
About This Shop
St. John’s Hospice has been supporting patients, families, and the wider community in North Lancashire and the South Lakes since 1986. Serving a population of over 250,000 people, we are specialists in palliative care for a wide range of life-limiting conditions.
We have 3 main service streams; our in-patient ward, our Day Hospice and our Hospice at Home team. Last year, we looked after 400 patients in our ward. Patients are admitted for end-of-life care but we also help a lot of patients and their families with respite care and symptom control. Over 50% of our in-patients are discharged home after their stay.
These wonderful services and the many more that we offer are only possible because of our supporters. We are not part of the NHS, we are a local charity. It costs £10,000 every single day, to keep St. John’s Hospice open. We receive just 30% of this from government funding. That means that we have to raise £7,000 each day from our fundraising activities.
St. John’s Hospice is the proud owner of charity shops in the Lancaster, Morecambe, and Kendal areas. Our shops provide not only vital income to the hospice but also allow us to have a presence in the community that supports us.
They are mainly staffed by volunteers, whose time is most valuable to us and allows us to ensure that much-needed income is directed back to the services that the hospice provides.
St. John’s Hospice now has four Furniture & Home Shops, located on Slyne Road, Lancaster (next to Spar Shop), on Garstang High Street, Highgate, Kendal, and the Arndale Shopping Centre in Morecambe.
