About S.C.A.D
About This Shop
In a largely rural area such as Yorkshire, many people struggle with transport problems. If you also have a disability, you will know how difficult it can be. SCAD Transport was set up to provide an efficient, safe, and reasonably priced transport system for people in and around the local area.
Skipton and Craven Action for Disability was formed in 1981, by Marjorie Charlesworth a Yorkshire lady. Gathering a group of people together she encouraged them to follow the philosophy of Seeing, Caring And Doing. Now kept alive by great individual effort SCAD became Craven’s largest locally registered charity.
The charity is a membership organisation with a small membership fee is payable, membership can be individual or joint ( 2 people living at the same address) or Group Membership (Nursing/Care Homes, Hospices, etc.)
Dial-A-Ride:- Scad Transport currently serves all Craven and outlying districts of North & West Yorkshire. We have eight vehicles based in Skipton. All are fully wheelchair accessible, comply with the latest safety regulations, and are regularly maintained. Our friendly and caring drivers are all CRB certified and are qualified to MIDAS standards (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme). Our Minibuses collect from door to door. People use us to travel to doctors and hospital appointments, hairdressers, dentists, visit friends and family, shopping, visit’s to Care Homes, Nursing Homes, etc, or just to get out for the day.
Organised Day Trips:- The charity provides organised day trips to places of interest throughout the year such as Blackpool, Southport, Scarborough, Bridlington, Whitby, Lake District, Garden Centres, Museums, Pub Lunches, and many other places. (A volunteer escort accompanies all trips).
Disability Activity Groups:- We provide weekly disability transportation for the following:- Swimming Group, Indoor Bowls Group, Photography Group, Art Group, Social Group, Bingo Group. (Escorts in attendance)
Special Schools:- The charity operates several contracts on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council taking children with ‘special needs’ to the local schools. (Escorts and Carers accompany where necessary).
CANAL BOAT – After a massive fundraising effort in 1990 SCAD purchased a canal boat and named it after its founder ‘Marjorie Charlesworth’. After 13 years of wonderful service, the ‘Marjorie Charlesworth’ was retired from service and replaced by a new purposely built canal boat following another massive effort of fundraising between 2002/2003. This was named ‘SCAD’s Endeavour’.
The ‘Endeavour’ has since given enormous pleasure to people of all ages with disability or mobility difficulties following the traditions of the ‘Marjorie Charlesworth’.
