PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, caring for more than 350,000 pet patients belonging to people in need.
PDSA provides free veterinary to sick and injured pets. The charity was founded in 1917 by animal welfare pioneer, Maria Dickin CBE, after witnessing the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. This year the PDSA will provide 1.8 million free treatments to pets in need of vets and more than 200,000 preventative treatments. PDSA operates 47 PetAid hospitals across the UK and works with over 340 private veterinary practices. The charities PetAid services will cost £50 million to run this year and receives no government or lottery funding and relies on the generosity of the public for funding, mainly through trade, donations, and gifts in wills. 4800 volunteer donate their skills and time to PDSA, which saves the charity millions in employment costs. The majority of volunteers help in the PDSA’s network of retail shops across the UK.
PDSA shops stock a range of quality donated items such as clothing, accessories, books, and household goods as well as new goods, including gifts, cards, diaries, and calendars. Some of the shops are also large enough to be able to offer furniture including occasional tables, chests of drawers and bookcases.
