About Mencap
About This Shop
Mencap Society embarked on opening a chain of new retail stores in 2016 and the launch of the stores is a hugely important step for the charity; and with the intention of helping Mencap create employment opportunities, build relationships within local communities, and of course giving a boost to fundraising efforts, which will allow continued support to people with a learning disability to live the lives they choose.
Mencap shops will offer the chance for people with a learning disability and the public to meet and work together; building relationships and bringing together communities. It’s a really great opportunity to raise awareness of learning disabilities in local communities and Mencap hopes their stores will become a well-loved addition to Britain’s communities as they open more stores.
Mencap plans to open up to 130 shops nationwide in the next 3-5 years. The shops will range from standard charity shops, to discount shops and donation stations. Through the shops, Mencap looks to boost employment and inclusion of people with a learning disability in local communities; aiming to create over 150 paid full-time roles, as well as voluntary roles and work experience placements for people with a learning disability.
Mencap is asking people to have a good clear out and donate their unwanted items to their new stores, with stores accepting donations of a wide variety of goods, including but not limited to the following:
• Women’s, men’s and children’s clothing
• Shoes, handbags, jewellery and other accessories
• Quality homeware – from vases and photo frames to ornaments and tea sets
• Electrical goods
• Books, toys, CDs and DVDs.
